RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Turns out there's some truth to the long-held belief that success in college sports leads to a boost in applications.
The phenomenon is called the "Flutie Effect" -- because applications to Boston College jumped about 30% in the two years after Doug Flutie's Hail Mary pass beat Miami in 1984.
Now two professors have been able to quantify what until now had been mostly anecdotal evidence.
